Description: This dataset represents a local‑municipality‑level hazardous materials (Hazmat) risk layer for KwaZulu‑Natal (KZN), South Africa. The layer was developed by integrating multiple spatial risk factors related to hazardous materials and waste, including land use, proximity to hospitals, and wastewater treatment works. A weighted spatial analysis was applied to generate a combined Hazmat risk surface, which was subsequently summarised and associated with local municipal boundaries. The dataset supports disaster risk assessment, planning, and decision‑making, particularly for emergency preparedness and hazardous materials management. Process Steps1. Weighted Hazard AnalysisA weighted sum analysis was performed using ArcGIS Pro Spatial Analyst to combine three reclassified raster layers representing Hazmat‑related risk factors:Reclassified land‑use risk layer (weight: 40%)Reclassified hospital proximity risk layer (weight: 25%)Reclassified wastewater treatment works (WWTW) risk layer (weight: 35%)Each input raster represented relative hazard intensity and was standardised prior to combination. The weighted sum operation produced a composite raster representing the cumulative hazardous materials risk score for each location. Hazard ClassificationHazard scores were classified on a relative ordinal scale, where higher values indicate greater potential hazardous materials risk. Municipalities with the highest scores represent areas with concentrated industrial activity, hazardous waste handling facilities, medical facilities, and associated infrastructure.
